St Leger Goold The Wimbledon runner-up was convicted of murder in 1907 along with his wife after a railway employee in Marseilles noticed a stench coming from GooldÕs luggage and, on opening the suitcase, discovered the chopped-up remains of a woman. He was sent to DevilÕs Island, where he died. Goold, the 1879 finalist, fell apart after his defeat by the Rev J T Hartley, who drove home on the middle Sunday of the tournament to deliver a sermon.
