The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA; /ˈfiːfə/ FEE-fə), meaning International Federation of Association Football, is the global governing body of association football, beach soccer, and futsal. Founded on 21 May 1904, FIFA was established to oversee international competition among the national associations of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain (represented by Real Madrid CF), Sweden, and Switzerland. Its headquarters are located in Zurich, Switzerland, and it now comprises 211 national associations.
These associations are also part of one of six regional confederations:
CAF (Africa)
AFC (Asia)
UEFA (Europe)
CONCACAF (North & Central America and the Caribbean)
OFC (Oceania)
CONMEBOL (South America)
FIFA’s role extends beyond regulation; it organizes and promotes football worldwide. According to its statutes, FIFA’s core objectives include the global development of football, ensuring broad accessibility, and upholding integrity and fair play.
FIFA is best known for organizing major international tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup, which began in 1930, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, launched in 1991. While it does not independently determine the laws of the game—that responsibility lies with the International Football Association Board (IFAB), of which FIFA is a member—it enforces these rules in all its competitions.
FIFA’s events are major revenue generators, primarily through sponsorships. In 2022, the organization reported over US$5.8 billion in revenue for the 2019–2022 cycle, ending with a net profit of $1.2 billion and cash reserves exceeding $3.9 billion.
Although it is often misguided in its politics. the core essence is still the promotion of Football. Below just a few examples of great football moments from Fifa and Uefa
