1978-What a Year

1978

1978 must have been one of the most significant years well at least in a pop culture way, the amount of classic movies that were released that year and classic songs is just phenomenal.

Lets start with some of the songs.

Wuthering Heights

Written by an 18 year old Kate Bush taken from the album which was partially produced by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.

It was Kate Bush’s first single and reached Number 1 in January 1978 and stayed there for 4 weeks. It was the first song composed and written by a woman to reach number one in the UK.

The Gibb Brothers

gty_bee_gees_andy_gibb_70s_thg_120521_wmain

I deliberately did not say the Bee Gees because in 1978 the Bee Gees and their younger sibling Andy Gibb all had several songs in the charts.

The Bee Gees had several hits from the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever and Barry Gibb’s ‘Grease; sung by Frankie Valli also topped the charts.

Where Andy Gibb had success with songs like “Shadow Dancing” and “An Everlasting Love”

Dreadlock Holiday

A reggae song by 10CC. Although they had been around for a while and did have other hits like ‘The Wallstreet shuffle’ and ‘ Rubber Bullets’ this British Rock band did get their biggest hit in 1978 with a Reggae Tune.

But the list of massive hits goes on with artists like Michael Jackso,Eric Clapton,Kansas,The Rollong Stones, Paul McCartney and the Wings and ABBA.I could go on forever, therefore swiftly moving to movies

Starting off with the aforemention:

Grease

grease-lightning-allan-carr.jpg

The most successful musical ever and although I am not a great musical fan, Grease did something to my psyche, I absolutely love the movie. I am not going to say too much about it, I will leave the music to the talking. This is my favourite song of Grease, it might surprise you that is not one of the countless hits.

Finishing up with one of the best movies ever made

The Deer Hunter

The Deer Hunter

Co-written and directed by Michael Cimino about a trio of Russian American steelworkers whose lives are changed forever after they fought in the Vietnam War. The same Michael Cimino would cause the demise of United Artists less then 2 years later.

But the Deer Hunter is still in my Top 5 of all tine favourite movies.

By the way 1978 was also the year of 3 popes

Pope Paul VI dies at age of 80.
John Paul I Becomes Pope from August 26th , 1978 and dies just 33 days later on September 28, 1978
Cardinal Karol Wojtyla becomes Pope John Paul II

Movie sequels that never should have been made.

74456-207754-MovieSequels2jpg-620x

I am not going to say that every movie sequel is bad, because there are some good ones out there. However in general most sequels are really money making vehicles especially when they are following a very successful movie.

I could easily fill this page with hundreds of bad sequels but I am limiting it to 3. Three sequels of iconic movies, you may not even know they were made.

Grease 2

MV5BMDBkOWY2NzItYzQ5NS00OTcwLTlkMjItYmQ3Y2M5MGQ2NTM4XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMjUyNDk2ODc@._V1_

I believe only 2 people actually saw this movie, I am one of them I would like to know who the other person was. It was just an awful movie, no redeeming features whatsoever.

What made it so shocking for me is that I am a massive Grease fan I had high hopes for this sequel. It was made in 1982.

The movie was set again at Rydell High but the in the year 1961.

The plot

Michael Carrington is the new kid in school. An English student considered a nerdy brainiac who  has to prove himself to the leader of a girls’ gang whose members can only date greasers, the Pink ladies, lead by  Stephanie, played by Michelle Pfeiffer.

It got 4.2 out of 10 on IMDB

Staying Alive

Another classic 70s movies destroyed by its sequel. The original of course being “Saturday Night Fever”

This time at least they stuck with the same character and actor,John Travolta, but that didn’t make the movie any better. In fact the opposite was true.

The Plot

In this sequel to Saturday Night Fever, former disco king Tony Manero has left Brooklyn and lives in Manhattan. He stays in a cheap hotel and works as a dance instructor and as a waiter at a dance club, trying to succeed as a professional dancer on Broadway.

It got 4.5 out of 10 on IMDB

Well it was directed by Sylvester Stallone

Exorcist II: The Heretic

MV5BNGY4ZGMzYmMtZDkyOS00ZjJkLTlhM2QtZTA4ZWEyNzg1OWNjXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjE5MjUyOTM@._V1_

The original “The Exorcist” I still consider the scariest movie ever made.

I remember watching it for the 1st time. I created the perfect atmosphere, I had darkened my room so I would focus only on the screen. While I was watching the movie I didn’t affect me at all, however when I tried to go to sleep afterwards, I couldn’t. In fact I stayed awake for 3 nights.

Needless to say I had high hopes for the sequel which was made in 1977, 4 years after the original. I only saw both movies many years afterwards.

The sequel had the opposite affect on me, it put me to sleep within 10 minutes, because it was just so boring.

The Plot

A teenage girl once possessed by a demon finds that it still lurks within her. Meanwhile, a priest investigates the death of the girl’s exorcist.

It got 3.7 out of 10 on IMDB

Grease,Elvis and Star Wars

Screen-Shot-2015-03-09-at-1.47.08-PM

I am not going to apologize for this but it is a fact I am a massive Grease fan, and today happens to be the anniversary of the single “Grease” reaching the #1 position on the Billboard top 100.

However as the title of this blog suggests there is more to the story. Here are some lesser known fact about the most successful musical of all time.

Elvis was Offered a Feature Role

The story goes that the King of Rock was asked to be the Guardian Angel, Frenchy’s hair salon singing mentor, but when he turned it down Frankie Avalon was given the part instead.

Carrie Fisher Almost Got The Role of Sandy

Yes it’s true. Our Star Wars favorite was considered for the role, but “Grease” director thought she didn’t have the right look for Sandy. Maybe his friend George Lucas talked him out of it.

This Company Lost Out Big Time

Coca- Cola had initially had a lucrative deal with the film creators, but unfortunately for them their agreement stopped in the later stages of shooting. Because of this, any hints of Coca-Cola branding were blurred out of the last edits of the film.

Elvis Died on the Same Day as Shooting Look at Me I’m Sandra Dee

To pay respect to the music legend, who almost played a part in “Grease”, the producers added a line to the Sandra Dee song. Next time you watch, try listen out for it, “Elvis Elvis let me be, keep that pelvis far from me”.

Not A Teenage Heartbreak

Though most of the characters were supposedly high school sweethearts, the real life actors were far from it. Travolta was 23, Jeff Conaway was 26 and Olivia Newton-John was 28. Makes you look at them differently right?

Danny was Almost Played by Someone Else

Initially, producers offered the main role to Henry Winkler, the Happy Days actor who played Fonzie. We are so glad he turned it down, giving John the limelight he deserved.

Not having a Ball

Lucille Ball’s daughter was the first to be offered the role of Rizzo. Though after stating that she was better than the role offered, Rizzo became the character we know her as today.

Barry Pearl AKA Doody, AKA Professor Erasmus Q. Tinkerputt.
