ROCKTOBER Episode 7: Paranoid-Black Sabbath.

“Paranoid” is a song by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released in 1970 off the band’s second studio album Paranoid (1970). It is the first single from the album, while the B-side is the song “The Wizard”. It reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and number 61 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

It was the first Black Sabbath single release, coming six months after their self-titled debut was released. Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler (from Guitar World magazine, March 2004):

A lot of the Paranoid album was written around the time of our first album, Black Sabbath. We recorded the whole thing in about 2 or 3 days, live in the studio. The song “Paranoid” was written as an afterthought. We basically needed a 3 minute filler for the album, and Tony came up with the riff. I quickly did the lyrics, and Ozzy was reading them as he was singing.

Written off by critics as horror trash from ‘unskilled labourers’, Sabbath’s masterpiece album took beaten-down listeners on a rollercoaster out of their struggles.

Finished with my woman ’cause
She couldn’t help me with my mind
People think I’m insane because
I am frowning all the time
All day long I think of things
But nothing seems to satisfy
Think I’ll lose my mind
If I don’t find something to pacify
Can you help me
Occupy my brain?
Oh yeah
I need someone to show me
The things in life that I can’t find
I can’t see the things that make
True happiness, I must be blind
Make a joke and I will sigh
And you will laugh and I will cry
Happiness I cannot feel
And love to me is so unreal
And so as you hear these words
Telling you now of my state
I tell you to enjoy life
I wish I could but it’s too late

ROCKTOBER Episode 6:Eruption-Van Halen

I think it is safe to say that Eddie van Halen changed the concept of a guitar solo forever, when he first played “Eruption”. Not only guitar solos, rock guitar in general.

Eruption” solo popularized the tapping style of guitar playing, and in doing so revolutionized the sound of rock. Not bad for a tune that wasn’t even meant to be released

Initially, “Eruption” was not considered as a track for the Van Halen debut album as it was just a guitar solo Eddie performed live in the clubs. But Ted Templeman overheard it in the studio as Eddie was rehearsing it for a club date at the Whisky a Go Go and decided to include it on the album. Eddie recalled, “I didn’t even play it right. There’s a mistake at the top end of it. To this day, whenever I hear it, I always think, ‘Man, I could’ve played it better.'”

In just one minute and 42 seconds, Van Halen changed what a guitar solo could do. His revolutionary two-handed tapping technique produced sounds unlike what fans had ever heard before.

ROCKTOBER Episode4:Nothing Else matter-Metallica.

“Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica, was released in 1992 as the third single from their self-titled fifth studio album, Metallica. The song peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, number 6 on the UK Singles Chart, number 1 in Denmark, and reached the top ten on many other European charts. “Nothing Else Matters” was featured as a playable track in the music video game Guitar Hero: Metallica. Recognized as one of Metallica’s best known and most popular songs, the power ballad has become a staple in live performances.

Metallica fans might have been confused when the band released Nothing Else Matters . A touchy-feely ballad that front man James Hetfield had written about missing his then-girlfriend Kristen Martinez while on tour, the song was a far cry from the war’n ’lightning imagery that had dominated Metallica’s past decade. But for fans who were paying attention, the song was the next logical step in the band’s progression.

It is definitely one of my all time favourites.

Epic Rock-Episode 12:Megadeth-Peace sells..But who is buying??

“Peace Sells” is a song by American thrash metal band Megadeth from their 1986 album Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?, written by Dave Mustaine. It has since been a constant at Megadeth concerts. According to David Ellefson, it became quickly apparent when playing the song live prior to recording the album that “Peace Sells” would be a hit. In 2006, VH1 ranked “Peace Sells” at number 11 on their list of the “40 Greatest Metal Songs” of all time. The song is also known for the distinctive bass intro played by Ellefson.

Happy Birthday Dave Mustaine

Lyrics
What do you mean I don’t believe in God?
I talk to him everyday.
What do you mean, I don’t support your system?

I go to court when I have to
What do you mean, I can’t get to work on time?
I got nothing better to do.
And, what do you mean, I don’t pay my bills?

Why do you think I’m broke? Huh?
If there’s a new way,
I’ll be the first in line.
But it better work this time.

What do you mean, I hurt your feelings?
I didn’t know you had any feelings.
What do you mean, I ain’t kind?
Just not your kind.

What do you mean, I couldn’t be the President
Of the United States of America?
Tell me something, it’s still We the people, right?

If there’s a new way
I’ll be the first in line
But it better work this time
Can you put a price on peace?

Peace,
Peace sells…
Peace,
Peace sells…
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
Peace sells, but who’s buying?
No, peace sells
Peace sells

Epic Rock-Episode 11:Linkin Park-In the End.

“In the End” is a song by American rock band Linkin Park. It is the eighth track on their debut album, Hybrid Theory (2000), and was released as the album’s fourth and final single.

“In the End” received positive reviews by music critics, with most reviewers complimenting the song’s signature piano riff, as well as noting rapper Mike Shinoda’s vocal prominence in the song. “In the End” also achieved mainstream popularity, and was a commercial success upon release. The song reached the top ten on numerous worldwide music charts and reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, the band’s highest peak on the chart, as well as their first song that peaked within the top 40 in early 2002, making it a sleeper hit. It also reached number one on the Z100 top 100 songs of 2002 countdown. It ranked at number 121 in Blender magazine’s The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born. In June 2021, it became the first nu metal song to surpass one billion streams on Spotify.

One thing I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time

All I know
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day

The clock ticks life away
It’s so unreal
Didn’t look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Tryin’ to hold on, did-didn’t even know
I wasted it all just to watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried

It all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually
Be a memory of a time when I tried so hard
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall to lose it all

But in the end it doesn’t even matter
One thing, I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mockin’ me
Acting like I was part of your property

Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so far
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me in the end

You kept everything inside and even though I tried
It all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually
Be a memory of a time when I tried so hard
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall to lose it all

But in the end it doesn’t even matter
I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go

For all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end it doesn’t even matter

Epic Rock Ballads-Episode 3: The Sun goes Down by Thin Lizzy.

Thin Lizzy was one of Ireland’s finest band. Before U2 there was Thin Lizzy. In fact in 1976 when U2 formed, Thin Lizzy had a number one hit on Top of The Pops in the UK, with “the Boys are back in Town”

However this blog is not about that song, but about my favourite Lizzy song “The Sun Goes Down”

Co-written with new boy Darren Wharton, this would be the band’s last ever single, and is one of Lynott’s finest compositions. Released on the Vertigo label August 6, 1983 in both 7 inch and 12 inch formats, it was backed by “Baby Please Don’t Go”. Running to a full 6 minutes 19 seconds – surprisingly long for a single – it was produced by the band and Chris Tsangarides. In keeping with the spirit of the track, it features some fine, subdued guitar rather than the customary twin lead manic soloing. The single reached only 52 in the UK charts.

Lyrics

There is a demon among us whose soul belongs in hell
Sent here to redeem us, she knows it all to well
He comes and goes, he comes and goes
she knows it all too well
But when all is said and done
The sun goes down

She tries her best to leave him, but she is still captured by his spell
She knows now she must deceive him, he knows it all to well
She comes and goes, she comes and goes, he knows it all too well
But when all is said and done
The sun goes down

She comes and goes, she comes and goes
he knows it all too well
But when all is said and done
The sun goes down

There is a demon within us
The sun goes down
She tries her best to deceive him
The sun goes down

Epic Rock-Episode 6:Faith no More-Epic

Mike Patton joined Faith No More in 1989 and wrote the song’s enigmatic lyrics, which constantly allude to “it,” without ever explaining what “it” is.

The bridge simply consists of the band shouting, “It’s it,” while Patton responds with, “What is it?” (The word “epic” is never mentioned in the lyrics.

Patton gave some insight on the song’s meaning when he told Circus magazine in 1990: “It was about sexual frustration. Sex and lack of sex.”

Later in the interview, the topic of masturbation comes up, and Patton says: “Most people don’t like to talk about it. I’m here to tell ya, I love it. That’s kinda of what Epic’s really about.”

“Epic”

Can you feel it, see it, hear it today?
If you can’t, then it doesn’t matter anyway
You will never understand it, ’cause it happens too fast
And it feels so good, it’s like walking on glass
It’s so cool, it’s so hip, it’s alright
It’s so groovy, it’s outta sight
You can touch it, smell it, taste it, so sweet
But it makes no difference ’cause it knocks you off your feet

You want it all, but you can’t have it (Yeah, yeah, yeah)

It’s crying, bleeding, lying on the floor
So you lay down on it and you do it some more
You’ve got to share it, so you dare it
Then you bare it and you tear it

You want it all, but you can’t have it (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
It’s in your face, but you can’t grab it (Yeah, yeah, yeah)

It’s alive, afraid, a lie, a sin
It’s magic, it’s tragic, it’s a loss, it’s a win
It’s dark, it’s moist, it’s a bitter pain
It’s sad, it happened, and it’s a shame

You want it all, but you can’t have it (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
It’s in your face, but you can’t grab it (Yeah, yeah, yeah)

What is it? It’s it
What is it? It’s it
What is it? It’s it
What is it? It’s it

You want it all, but you can’t have it (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
It’s in your face, but you can’t grab it (Yeah, yeah, yeah)

What is it? It’s it
What is it? It’s it
What is it? It’s it
What is it?

You want it all, but you can’t have it (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
It’s in your face, but you can’t grab it (Yeah, yeah, yeah)

It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it! (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
It’s it! What is it?
It’s it!

Epic Rock-Episode 5:Black Sabbath-Headless Cross

Headless Cross is the thirtieth single from Black Sabbath

“Headless Cross”

Look through the people, and on through the mist
To the hill of the headless cross
Where all witches meet, on a night such as this,
And the power of darkness is host
They come face to face, eye to eye, soul to soul,
With an Angel that fell from the sky
Borne on the air, are the screams and the wails
Of the masses appointed to die

Listen for the feet as they pound the land to a tune of thunder
Watch as the legions ride again to a fate of death or torture,
At the headless cross, at the headless cross

From the first evil night, when a black flash of light
Cut the crucifix half to the ground
There’s been no escape from the power of Satan,
On a nation so brave and so proud

Listen for the feet as they pound the land to a tune of thunder
Watch as the legions ride again to a fate of death or torture,
At the headless cross, at the headless cross

How do you feel, when the locks refuse the key
And the master is calling your name,
Does the luck of the charm, really keep you from harm
Does the talisman protect you from pain

Listen for the feet as they pound the land to a tune of thunder
Watch as the legions ride again to a fate of death or torture,
At the headless cross, at the headless cross

From the first evil night, when a black flash of light
Cut the crucifix half to the ground
There’s no escaping from the power of Satan
For a people so brave and so proud

Listen for the feet as they pound the land to a tune of thunder
Watch as the legions ride again to a fate of death or torture,
At the headless cross, at the headless cross
At the headless cross, at the headless cross

Where will you run to, at the headless cross
Look, to the headless cross

Epic Rock-Episode 4:Dio Holy Diver

Ronnie James Dio said the lyrics are about a Christ figure on another planet who sacrifices himself to redeem his people. When the people learn that he intends to leave them to save people on other planets, they selfishly ask him to stay.

[Intro]
Mhhh-hm-hmm
Yeah, yeah

[Verse 1]
Holy Diver
You’ve been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh, what’s becoming of me?
Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he’s clean
Oh, don’t you see what I mean?
[Chorus]
Gotta get away
Holy Diver, yeah

[Verse 2]
Got shiny diamonds
Like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue
Something is coming for you, look out!
Race for the morning
You can hide in the sun ’til you see the light
Oh, we will pray it’s all right

[Chorus]
Gotta get away, get away

[Bridge]
Between the velvet lies
There’s a truth that’s hard as steel, yeah
The vision never dies
Life’s a never-ending wheel, say

[Verse 3]
Holy Diver
You’re the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid
Jump, jump; jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he’s mean
Some light can never be seen, yeah!
[Guitar Solo]

[Verse 1]
Holy Diver
You’ve been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh, what’s becoming of me? No! No!
Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he’s clean
Oh, don’t you see what I mean?

[Chorus]
Gotta get away, get away
Gotta get away, get away, yeah

[Outro]
Holy Diver, sole survivor
You’re the one who’s clean
Holy Diver, Holy Diver
There’s a cat in the blue coming after you, Holy Diver
Oh, Holy Diver
Yeah, alright
Get away, get away, get away
Holy Diver, Holy Diver
Oh, Holy Diver
Mhhh-hmmm-hmmm

Epic Rock-Episode 3-Queensryche-Suite Sister Mary

Dr. X: “Kill her. That’s all you have to do”
Nikki: “Kill Mary?”
Dr. X: “She’s a risk, and get the priest as well”
10 P.M., I feel the rain coming down
My face feels the wet, my mind the storm
Flashing lights as people race to find shelter from the pour
Moving silent, through the streets, they’re mine, they’re mine
Midnite, she sings praises in the Hall
To saintly faces hallowed be their names she can’t recall
Sister Mary, virgin Mary, silent with her sin
“What are you doing out in the rain?”
She feels me, I can taste her breath when she speaks
“I’ve been waiting for you, Come in”
Mary, Mary just a whore for the underground
They made you pay in guilt for your salvation
Thought you had them fooled?
Now they’ve sent me for you
You know too much for your own good
Don’t offer me faith, I’ve got all I need here
My faith is growing, growing tight against the seam
What we need is trust, to keep us both alive
Help us make it through the night
I’ve no more want of any faith
Binds my arm and feed my mind
The only peace I’ve ever known
I’ll close my eyes and you shoot
No Mary, listen, you’ve got to pull your strength from my lips
I pray I feed you well
Your precious cross is gone, it made me wait so long
For what you gave to everyone
The priest is cold and dead on his knees he fed
From my barrel of death, he turned the Holy water red
As he died he said thank you
I just watched him bleed
I feel the flow, the blessed stain
Sweating hands like fire, and flames
Burn my thighs, spread in sacrificial rite
The hallowed altar burns my flesh once more tonight
Mary, sweet lady of pain
Always alone
Blind you search for the truth
I see myself in you, parallel lives
Winding at light-speed through time
No time to rest yet
We’ve got to stop his game
Before madness has the final laugh
Too much bloodshed
We’re being used and fed
Like rats in experiments
No final outcome here
Only pain and fear
It’s followed us both all our lives
There’s one thing left to see
Will it be him or me?
There’s one more candle left to light
Don’t turn your back on my disgrace
The blood of Christ can’t heal my wounds so deep
The sins of man are all I taste
Can’t spit the memory from my mind
I can’t cry anymore
Mary, my lady of pain, always alone
Blind you search for the truth
I see myself in you, parallel lives
Winding at light-speed through time, you’re mine
