Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day everybody.

Although I am a bit confused about the date. Earth day really should be held on October 23. Everyone knows that the earth was created on 23 October 4004 BC at 6 pm to be precise. Well at least according to Archbishop James Ussher.

He was born in Dublin on January 4th , 1581 in Dublin, to a well-to-do family. He was the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland between 1625 until his death in 1656.

He also calculated the dates of other biblical events, concluding, for example, that Adam and Eve were driven from Paradise on Monday 10 November 4004 BC.

Noah’s ark touched down on Mt Ararat on 5 May 2348 BC `on a Wednesday.

How did Ussher come up with these fairly specific and exacts dates? He used the chronologies in the Hebrew text of Genesis 5 and 11, together with other Bible passages.

To be fair to him he was only off by a few billion years.

But why is April 22 designated as ‘Earth Day’ ?

During a UNESCO Conference, in 1969 in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell suggested a designated day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, he proposed March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature’s balance was later sanctioned in a proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later a United States Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed the idea to hold a nationwide environmental educational forum on April 22, 1970.

This would be the date to be adopted as ‘Earth Day’ which had now goen into its 51st anniversary.

It is now an international annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection. And includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG, including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.

EARTHDAY.ORG missions statement is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide.

In November 1995 Michael Jackson released the single “Earth Song” I am not sure of he released it with ‘Earth Day’ in mind but I do think it is an appropriate song to finish up with.
