Like his leader and idol, Adolf Hitler was a failed artist and Joseph Göbbels a failed author. Both men sought scapegoats for their shortcomings. Below is a testimony from Dr Johnston, who I believe was a fellow-schoolmate of Göbbels.
“I lived in Rheydt in Rheinland and attended secondary school here. Rheydt is the birthplace of Dr Joseph Göoebbels. He came from a very modest background. His father worked as a weaver in a weaving mill. Göebbels was also a pupil at the same secondary school but was three years above me. I first encountered him during a school production of the play, The Quitzows. He had a role in this play, and I still remember how he hobbled across the stage.
When Göebbels took his school leaving examinations alongside his classmates, he gave the farewell address on behalf of the graduates since he was the best student in the class. After his speech, the content I no longer remember, his teacher Professor Balzer—a fervent antisemite incidentally—approached him and told him that although he had been a good student, he would never become an accomplished speaker.
Once school had finished, Göebbels went to Heidelberg and studied literature at the local university under the Jewish Professor Gundolf.

After he had obtained his doctoral degree, he planned to undergo further training to become a dramatic advisor. He moved to Cologne and began training under the Jewish Dramatic Advisor Simochowicz—I hope I have not mistaken the name – of the Cologne Theatre. However, later he went to Max Reinhardt, who rejected him as incapable.
Thus expelled from his intended career, Göebbels attempted to gain a position in the Centre Party. However, he was not successful. In Munich, he re-connected with a school friend, Dr Prang, who was already exceptionally anti-Semitic. Through this connection, he became a member of the National Socialist Party in 1929 or 1930. He later went to Essen and obtained the position of editor of the Nazi newspaper. While in Rheydt, Göebbels had previously been close friends with the Jewish lawyer, Dr Joseph and abandoned this friendship completely once he went to Munich. Then in Rheydt, there has naturally been great interest in his background since he became so prominent. My knowledge of this background came from my many conversations about and with him.”
Göbbels, just like Hitler, had some people in their lives that had a positive impact but belonged to the group of people they aimed to eradicate. Also, both Hitler and Göbbels did not qualify as Aryans. The policies they made up were all based on lies and deceit.
