Epic Rock Ballads-Episode 5:Queensryche-Silent Lucidity

Not just an epic ballad, but THE ballad. Well at least in my opinion, however, I am a bit bias when it comes to Queensryche, especially from the time when Geoff Tate was still the lead vocalist.

Cover up-Episode 1: Gonna Get Close to You-Queensryche and Dalbello

Every self respecting Heavy Metal fan will know “Gonna get Close to you” by Queensryche. But how many know it was actually a cover version?

The original was released in 1984 by Lisa Dalbello.

ROCKTOBER-Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime

It is rare that a song gets better when it has been re-released , but this is the case with “Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime”. It was originally released as “Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann” on October 5,1984 by Nena, written by Jörn-Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen and Carlo Karges.

The original song was a commercial success in Europe and it reached number 3 in the German charts in 1984.

It was the last top-five entry Nena was to have in her homeland for 19 years until in 2003 she reprised the song as the duet “Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime” with another 80s icon, Kim Wilde. as part of Nena’s 2002 career revival brought about by the triple platinum Nena feat. Nena album. The song also featured in all three seasons of the 2017-2020 Netflix German science fiction thriller series Dark.

There is a slight musical twist to the 2003 version.

The twist is not so much relating to the song but rather to the person who wrote the English lyrics, Lisa Dalbello.

Lisa Dalbello had a hit single in 1987 titled “Tango” .But that is not the twist I am talking about. She also wrote and released “Gonna Get close to you” which was covered by Seattle based Heavy Metal band Queensryche, it was their version that really got ne interested in the band and I have been a fan ever since. It is also a case where the cover version was better then the original.

It’s the Singer not the Song.

Vital Signs is a 1984 album released by one of my all time favourite bands Survivor. I was a bit reluctant to buy the album because Survivor had changed singers, from Dave Bickler to Jimi Jamison. However it turned out to be one of their best albums.

On it there was a track called “It’s the singer not the song” and I actually forgot how good that album and that particular track were.

I also think it is a true statement that a good singer makes the song. I was never a great Bob Dylan fan but I like a lot of his songs , sung by other singers.

This blog is a tribute to some of the finest Rock singers, well at least in my opinion. So sit back, relax and enjoy.

The trend of Retro

Just when you think that the whole world has gone digital and cyber-crazy a new trend emerges. It is the trend of’ old stuff coming back’, the ‘trend of Retro’ so to speak.

The above picture is of a Nokia 3310. Nokia announced that in the midst of all things ‘Smart’ they are bringing the 3310 back. It make sense I suppose because people are getting more and more frustrated(me included) about the battery life of the Smart Phones. At the end of the day regardless of all the fancy features, the primary function is still a Phone.

I had a 3310 and the battery would last forever. You could leave the phone alone for a month and you’d still have 99% battery life.

I grew up listening to Vinyl albums,singles and cassette tapes.

 

Then around 1982 this new invention was released, the Compact Disc player.(even though Philips already had the first concept of a CD player in 1968) The CD’s were supposed to be indestructible, they could even survive nuclear disasters.

The CD’s were the future and would replace all vinyl and tape formats.

 

Then come 21st century and the world has gone on-line. Apple came out with this pocket size device called the iPod.intro_originalipod

It allowed customers to download music from the internet on the iPod. Many people think that the iPod was the first MP3 type of music player but in fact , the first MP3 player was developed in the early 1990s by Frauenhofer, but this player was unsuccessful. In 1997 Tomislav Uzelac of Advanced Multimedia Products invented the AMP MP3 Playback Engine, which is recognized as the first successful MP3 Player.

These devices were portable and would replace the Walkman’s and Discman devices. So the days of tapes and CD’s were surely numbered.

But the last few years there has been a revival of the Vinyl albums.And because it is now trendy to buy Vinyl albums again, record companies can charge these ‘Trendy’ new customers twice the price.

Even the cassette tape is set to make its return to a retailer near you. As for the CD’s they didn’t actually disappear.

Streaming is now the new format to threaten all other formats, but for some reason I don’t think that is really going to happen.

As for me I am holding on to all formats of music I have. I made the silly mistake in the 80’s to give away all my vinyl albums to replace them with CD’s. Not realizing that some albums were never going to be released on CD.Although in my collection at the time I was told that the debut  EP Queensryche by Queensryche was very unlikely to ever be released in a format other then Vinyl.
