The Goering Telegram

tekegram

On April 22,1945 Hitler had publicly admitted that the war was lost.He also had said that Göring was in a better position to negotiate a peace deal.

Previously on June 29,1941 a week into  the start of Operation Barbarossa, Hitler had issued a decree stating that in the event of his death. or if Hitler ever lost his freedom of action;by way of incapacity, disappearance or abduction;Göring was to act as Hitler’s deputy, with full power to act on Hitler’s behalf.

On April 23,1945 Göring sent a telegram to Hitler indicating that he would take over as the leader of Germany if Hitler would not reply by 22:00 PM.

“My Führer:

General Koller today gave me a briefing on the basis of communications given him by Colonel General Jodl and General Christian, according to which you had referred certain decisions to me and emphasized that I, in case negotiations would become necessary, would be in an easier position than you in Berlin. These views were so surprising and serious to me that I felt obligated to assume, in case by 2200 o’clock no answer is forthcoming, that you have lost your freedom of action. I shall then view the conditions of your decree as fulfilled and take action for the wellbeing of Nation and Fatherland. You know what I feel for you in these most difficult hours of my life and I cannot express this in words. God protect you and allow you despite everything to come here as soon as possible.

Your faithful Hermann Göring”

Hitler was not happy with this and branded Göring a traitor and stripped him of all powers and appointed Joseph Goebbels and Karl Dönitz as his successors.

Even in the last days they were still delusional.

April 23,1945- Speer and Goering

telegram

In the English language there is a saying ” The chickens are coming home to roost” it basically means bad deeds or words return to discomfort their perpetrator.

Hitler must have felt very much discomforted by the actions of two of his closest allies.

Hermann Göring sent Hitler a telegram wherein he gave Hitler an ultimatum.

“My Führer:

General Koller today gave me a briefing on the basis of communications given him by Colonel General Jodl and General Christian, according to which you had referred certain decisions to me and emphasized that I, in case negotiations would become necessary, would be in an easier position than you in Berlin. You know what I feel for you in these most difficult hours of my life and I cannot express this in words. God protect you and allow you despite everything to come here as soon as possible.

Your faithful Hermann Göring”

The telegram made Hitler furious and as a reaction he stripped his chosen successor of all power and appointed new political successors, Joseph Goebbels and Karl Dönitz.

On that same day Albert Speer visited Hitler for the last time to advise Hitler that he  ignored the Nero Decree for scorched earth. The Nero Decree was issued by Adolf Hitler on March 19, 1945 ordering the destruction of German infrastructure to prevent their use by Allied forces as they penetrated deep within Germany.

It was basically 2 evil men telling another evil man that the game was up.

The day after on April 24 another close ally of the Führer,Himmler, made a secret offer of surrender to the allied forces.

Somewhere in Corsica

Telegram 1

In order to understand the true horrors of WWII it is important to read the accounts of survivors, or listen to the stories of those who fought on the battlefields and saw the horrors first hand. Although they survived they would have been scarred forever either physically or mentally or both.

However sometimes it takes a simple telegram to truly see the impact the war had on those who stayed behind, we often forget they were victims too.

Like the telegram above of a sister of Sgt Arthur W. Studyvin, where she asks a simple but also poignant question to her Pastor. “Please say a prayer?”

Where some see a simple telegram ,I see a birthday present but also so much pain for not only did her parents die, she did not know the exact whereabouts of her brother. All she knew he was somewhere in Corsica. I doubt also if she knew if he was still alive but clearly she hoped so ,because the prayer she asked for was the only thing she could give her brother for his birthday.

I don’t know what happened to Sgt Arthur W. Studyvin, I too hope he survived, but the telegram by his sister is a stark reminder what war does to a family.
