Hear the Drummer get wicked.

The definition of a drummer in most dictionaries is “A person who plays the drums” It doesn’t get more basic then that. A drummer is much more then that though. A drummer is a percussionist who creates music using drums.

Most contemporary western bands that play rock, pop, jazz, or R&B music include a drummer for purposes including timekeeping and embellishing the musical timbre. The drummer’s equipment includes a drum kit (or “drum set” or “trap set”) which includes various drums, cymbals and an assortment of accessory hardware such as pedals, standing support mechanisms, and drum sticks.

After the death of legendary Rolling Stones Drummer Charlie Watts, it is a good time to look at some other drummers. There are thousands upon thousands I could choose from, but I am only picking a few, Some well known, and some lesser known and perhaps one or 2 surprises.

Starting off with the aforementioned Charlie Watts. He had been a member of the Stones since January 1963, when he joined Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones in their fledgling group.

Watts helped them become, with The Beatles, one of the bands who took rock ‘n’ roll to the masses in the 60s with classics like (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Get Off My Cloud and Sympathy for the Devil. He died August 24,2021 aged 80.

Alex Van Halen

Alexander Arthur Van Halen (born May 8, 1953) is an American musician, best known for being the drummer and co-founder of the rock band Van Halen. The band was formed in 1972 by Alex Van Halen; his younger brother, Eddie Van Halen; David Lee Roth; and Mark Stone under the name Mammoth before adding Michael Anthony in 1974 and changing their name to Van Halen. Warner Bros. signed the band in 1977, and its debut album was released a year later.

Max Werner

Max Werner is a Dutch musician. He was the lead singer, drummer, and percussionist of rock band Kayak. In 1972, Werner co-founded the band along with keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel, guitarist Johan Slager, and drummer Pim Koopman. He sang lead vocals (and played mellotron) on Kayak’s first five albums. He later switched to drums until the band split up in 1982. In 1999, he returned as singer for the Kayak album Close to the Fire. After a short tour in 2000, he had to leave again due to health problems.

Werner also recorded four solo albums. In May 1981, he scored a hit single with “Rain in May”, which peaked at No. 6 in the Netherlands. In June of the same year, it got as high as No. 74 on the American Billboard Hot 100 charts. In September 1981, the song peaked at No. 2 in Germany. Hard to believe that is 40 years ago.

Karen Carpenter

Karen Anne Carpenter (March 2, 1950 – February 4, 1983) was an American singer and drummer who, along with her elder brother Richard, was part of the duo the Carpenters. She was praised for her three-octave contralto vocal range and drumming abilities. Her struggle with and eventual death from anorexia would later raise awareness of eating disorders and body dysmorphia.

Sly Dunbar

Nearly ubiquitous reggae drummer Lowell Fillmore Dunbar played with everyone and, due to how frequently his riddims have been sampled, is quite possibly the world’s most recorded musician. Nicknamed for his devotion to Sly Stone, Dunbar recorded his first track, “Night Doctor,” with the Upsetters at age 15. His 1972 introduction to bassist Robbie Shakespeare led to a life-long working relationship, notably in Peter Tosh’s and Black Uhuru’s bands as well as the Rolling Stones’ 1978 Some Girls tour. Sly and Robbie translated dub reggae to the stage better than anyone. “Me and Robbie didn’t realize what we were doing until Jamaican music went dubwise and the bass and drum would come right in your face,” he explained. The distance between Carlton Barrett’s relaxed swing and Dunbar’s fierce metronomic playing marks the place where roots reggae evolved into its dancehall successor.

Cesar Zuiderwijk

Cornelis Johannes “Cesar” Zuiderwijk, (born 18 July 1948) is a Dutch drummer. He is best known as the drummer of the Dutch rock band, Golden Earring, a position he has held since 1970. When Zuiderwijk was twelve he started playing the guitar, but switched to drums two years later. He has been a drummer in a number of bands; his school band René & His Alligators, plus Hu & the Hilltops and Livin’ Blues.

He was asked to replace Golden Earring drummer Sieb Warner in 1970. Since then, apart from brief line-ups of five (with Robert Jan Stips and later Eelco Gelling), Golden Earring has consisted of the same four friends (Zuiderwijk, George Kooymans, Barry Hay and Rinus Gerritsen). Zuiderwijk is known to add a drum solo to each performance, which he concludes by launching himself over his drum kit.

I rarely get emotional when a musician passes away because to me they are merely mortals, just like every one else. However there have been 4 occasions where the death of a musician hit me hard. The first time was when Elvis dies, teh second time when Stevie Ray Vaughan shed his mortal coil. The 3rd time was when Dolores O’Riordan died the last time was on October 6,2020 when the news broke that one of me all thime heroes Eddie van Halen had left for that guitar shop in the sky.

In the months following the bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940, the Germans wanted daily life to continue as normal as possible. So entertainment was of great importance. And who better to help with this than the popular twosome of Snip and Snap. For years the comedy reviews of Willy Walden (Snip) and Piet Muyselaar (Snap) had drawn full houses.

Snip-en-Snap

This duo, with their joking around and often playing the ladies Snip and Snap in women’s dresses, helped many people forget about the war.

But in order to perform artists had to become members of the Kultuurkamer (Chamber of Culture), the organization established in 1941 to regulate the arts in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands. Even variety acts like Snip and Snap were required to register.

In 1942 Snip and Snap celebrated their fifth anniversary. The two string marionettes – also named Snip and Snap – depicted on the cover of the show booklet (bottom left) were specially made for Willy Walden and Piet Muyselaar for their anniversary revue Tot uw dienst  (At Your Service).

A  musician called Jan van Halen was one of the musicians in the later Snip en Snap shows, and legend has it that one of his sons once performed in the show. The son Eddie later formed the Hard Rock band Van Halen, together with his brother Alex.

Pinkpop: the death of an institute.

pinkpop_logo_jpg

PinkPop is the oldest and longest running annual dedicated pop and rock music festival in the world.

1982_51

It started in 1970 in the former mining town of Geleen in the south east of the Netherlands. It stayed there until 1986. In 1987 it moved north a bit to Baarlo and since 1988 it has been held in the town of Landgraaf.

In 2017  though it  decided to commit artistic and musical suicide by announcing that the 2017 headliner would be be Justin Bieber.

It is sad to see this legendary institution which originated in my home town taking its own life.

Let’s just have a look back at some of the legendary bands who performed there in the past.

RIP Pinkpop, it was good while it lasted.

Famous bands that changed their names.

golden_earring_-_toppop_1974_7

Starting off with probably the best known band from the low countries”Golden Earring”. Their name change was very subtle, they were formed in 1961 as the “Golden Earrings” they dropped the S in 1969.

gn4_dat_6478563-jpg-the_cranberries_to_return_for__summer_shows__in_2016

The next name change is a bit less subtle but still subtle enough “the Cranberries” started off as “the Cranberry Saw Us” in 1989. When their male lead singer left and was later replaced with the one and only Dolores O’Riordon history was made as Limerick’s biggest ever Rock act. Sadly Dolores O’Riordan passed away a few years ago.

.

1957,Liverpool a group of teenagers called themselves “the Quarry men” after they had tried names like ‘The Blackjacks, Johnny and the Moondogs, Japage 3’ However this skiffle band eventually became known as “the Beatles”. You may have heard of them.

Continuing on a Dutch theme with Van Halen. Eddie and Alex Van Halen formed their first band with three other boys, calling themselves The Broken Combs, performing at lunchtime at Hamilton Elementary School in Pasadena, whereEddie Van Halen was in the fourth grade. Eddie Van Halen would later say that this was when he first felt the desire to become a professional musician. In 1972, The Van Halens formed another band, originally called “Genesis.” The name was changed to “Mammoth” when they became aware of the English progressive rock band of the same name. Mammoth consisted of Eddie Van Halen on guitar and lead vocals, his brother Alex on drums and bass guitarist Mark Stone. Mammoth had no P.A. system of their own, so they rented one from David Lee Roth,a service for which he charged by the night. Eddie Van Halen became frustrated with singing lead vocals, and decided they could save money by adding Roth to the band.Michael Anthony later replaced Mark Stone on the bass guitar. The band opted to change its name because Roth suggested that the last name of the two brothers “sounded cool.”

u2-mojo-254-770

U2 Ireland’s biggest band. I can hear you say “What’s the Hype?” and you’d be correct. What is the Hype? That would be U2. The Hype started off as a 5 piece band. The Edge’s older brother,Dik Evans, used to be part of the band. After he left the band was renamed U2.

Even though they were called V2 on the posters for their first gig in the UK. About 6 people showed up.

This is the Dublin 4 in my hometown ‘Geleen’ in 1981.

led-zeppelin-bbc-album-review-fb72cd94-408c-4600-a911-f5a4f5d4730c

Led Zeppelin were not always called Led Zeppelin, in fact the had several incarnations. The first one being “the Yardbirds”. The band that included 3 of the world’s best guitarists ever. Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and the man musicians refer to as “God” Eric Clapton. Jimmy Page was actually the bassist.

In 1968 the Yardbirds played their last gig and “the New Yardbirds” were born with Robert Plant on vocals. However the name ‘the New Yardbirds’ didn’t stick, it went down like a lead balloon or even a Led Zeppelin.
