For many months and weeks people, organisations and communities up and down the country and abroad have been planning events and memorials in order to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day which takes place tomorrow. Being such a pivotal point in the war it is only right that it is commemorated and that those who took part in D-Day and the Normandy landings and those who died should be remembered. It is particularly fitting that a group of D-Day veterans have been taken over to Normandy for the special day and what memories it must bring up for them.
My village, Everton in Hampshire, will be having a commemoration service in front of the memorial stone followed by a talk by a local historian on the preparations for D-Day in the local area and how residents of the village might have witnessed activity from nearby ports and airstrips. A poem…
