Outside of the US not that much is really known about the American Civil war, we know the basics but not really the in depth history. Often there is a romantic view of the war based on Hollywood depictions of the time, or shows like North and South.

The pictures below show the complexity of the Civil War at times it was extremely brutal but is also had a sophistication that people are just not aware of.

A March, 1863 photo of the USS Essex. The 1000-ton ironclad river gunboat, originally a steam-powered ferry, was acquired during the American Civil War by the US Army in 1861 for the Western Gunboat Flotilla. She was transferred to the US Navy in 1862 and participated in several operations on the Mississippi River, including the capture of Baton Rouge and Port Hudson in 1863
