Kissing Evil

A Spontaneous Act of Impulse

On August 15, 1936, during the Summer Olympics in Berlin, officials, athletes, and spectators witnessed an unusual and unforgettable moment. At the men’s 1500-metre freestyle swimming final, a 43-year-old American tourist named Carla de Vries from Norwalk, California, made her way close to Hitler’s box. Clad in a red hat, she had been repeatedly blocked by Hitler’s SS guards—known as the “Black Guards”—while attempting to photograph him.

As the race reached its thrilling conclusion, the excited commotion broke through the security cordon. Seizing the opportunity, Carla not only shook Hitler’s hand but—on the impulse of the moment—leaned forward and kissed him. The crowd of around 20,000 spectators erupted in laughter, and Hitler appeared amused, clapping along as Carla triumphantly returned to her seat

When asked about her actions, De Vries explained: “Why? I simply embraced him because he appeared so friendly and gracious. People sitting near Der Führer’s box began to cheer and applaud so loudly that I ran back to my husband and told him we had better leave. I don’t know why I did it—certainly, I hadn’t planned such a thing.

It’s just that I’m a woman of impulses, I guess. It happened when I went down to take Hitler’s picture with my small movie camera. He was leaning forward, smiling, and seemed so friendly that I just stepped up and asked for his autograph, which he wrote on my swimming ticket. He kept on smiling, and so I kissed him.”

A Security Nightmare for the Führer

What was taken as a lighthearted, almost comedy-scene, quickly became a serious breach in Hitler’s tightly controlled image. Though filmed, the footage was heavily censored within Germany to avoid undermining the Führer’s aura of authority.

Behind closed doors, Hitler was furious—not so much about the kiss itself, but at the failure of his elite SS bodyguards to protect him. Several of them were dismissed in disgrace, and others were demoted. In fact, orders were issued to double the size of Hitler’s security detail for future public appearances.

The Echo Beyond Berlin

International press quickly picked up the story, labeling Carla de Vries as “the woman who kissed Hitler,” a moniker that stuck for years. Later, back in the U.S., she made headlines again—not for her historic kiss—but for unrelated acts of compassion, such as preventing a suicide in a mental institution and dealing with a labor strike on her husband’s California dairy farm Carla lived out her life sharing the story until her passing in 1985 at age 92.

Analysis: Why This Moment Matters

Symbolic Reversal: In a regime built on intimidation, public reverence, and awe, this spontaneous gesture destabilized the aura of Hitler’s invincibility—even if only briefly.

Propaganda Undermined: Despite the carefully orchestrated image of the Games as a showcase of Nazi glory, this unscripted event punctured the façade, albeit subtly.

Security and Control: The incident underscored Hitler’s obsession with control—even over seemingly innocuous interactions—and led to immediate tightening of his security protocols.
