Margareta Maria Gallinat—Just One of the Evil Ones

I am not going to say too much about Margareta Maria Gallinat. Suffice it to say she sought employment abroad to terrorize innocent citizens.

She was born in Ragnitz on 16 October 1894 in Rotsche Bach, Hamar.

In April 1940, Gallinat read a newspaper ad for Aufseherin and decided to apply. Two months later, she started in Ravensbrück and worked there until the summer of 1943, eventually becoming deputy Oberaufseherin.

From September 1943 to 1 July 1944, she was appointed SS-Oberaufseherin in the Vught transit camp and served as head of the Female Prisoners’ Division.

Conditions and Atrocities Under Her Supervision

While direct documentation of every action Gallinat took is limited, her position as chief female overseer made her complicit in the brutal living conditions and abuses in the camp. Some relevant facts about Vught during her tenure:

The camp recorded 749 deaths (men, women, children) from hunger, sickness, and mistreatment.
Of these, 329 deaths occurred at an execution site just outside the camp.

One infamous incident under the SS guard regime at Vught is known as the “Bunker Tragedy” in January 1944, where 74 women were confined in a very small cell of about 9 square meters, for more than 14 hours as a punishment. The conditions were so dire and overcrowded that 10 women died within one night. While the event is directly associated with commandant Adam Grünewald, the wider system of oversight, including female guards like Gallinat, contributed to the harsh regime in which such punishments happened.

Legacy and Uncertainties

Gallinat’s date of death is unknown. There is limited record on whether she was ever formally charged or tried after the war, or what her fate was post-1945.

Her role exemplifies the complicity of female SS overseers in the machinery of Nazi repression—positions of authority in camps like Vught allowed them to order, enforce, or permit cruelty, though much of what they did remains under-documented in individual detail.

Margarete was complicit in these crimes. She applied for the position, initially in Ravensbrück and later in Vught.
