A Rose for Every Soul in Auschwitz

For every soul that walked in fear,
Whose footsteps faded year by year,
A rose shall bloom where shadows lay,
To honor those who slipped away.

For every name that was erased,
For every tear that never traced
Its path down its cheeks was too cold, too numb,
A rose for each heart overcome.

For every cry the wind concealed,
For silent prayers that went unhealed,
A single rose will rise and stand,
In memory of a broken land.

For every child whose laughter ceased,
For every song that was released
Into the void of darkened skies,
A rose for every pair of eyes.

For every dream that turned to dust,
For all the faith, the endless trust,
A rose to bloom beneath the weight
Of human sorrow, human hate.

For every hand that reached for grace,
For every light that found no place,
A rose shall open, soft and pure,
A testament that will endure—

For every soul in Auschwitz bound,
In sacred silence, hear the sound—
A thousand roses, soft and sweet,
Where love and loss and courage meet.

  1. YOUR POEM IS BEAUTIFUL, DIRK. BUT I THINK IT MAY DEMEAN THE HOLOCAUST TO HAVE THIS IMAGERY FOR JEWISH VICTIMS WHICH WERE THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY. IT IS BETTER TO USE IMAGE OF TINY STONES WHICH JEWS APPLY TO THE GRAVESITE MONUMENTS. THAT IS SEEN IN FILMS. AND WE SHOULD REQUEST IT BECOME STANDARD TO LEAVE SUCH MONUMENTS, AND EVEN TO WRITE ABOUT IT OR INCLUDE IN POETRY. I RECOGNIZE THAT FOR NON JEWISH VICTIMS IT MAY BE MEANINGFUL.
