Esther Feitsma was born in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, on November 30, 1931. She was murdered in Auschwitz on October 8, 1942, at the age of just 10 years.
There is no picture of Esther Feitsma, nor is there much information about her.
So why did I choose to write about this seemingly random name? Because, to me, it’s not random. I stumbled upon her name by chance on the “Joods Monument” website.
But there’s more to it. I know an Esther Feitsma. Though she now goes by her married name, I have known her for many years. We’ve been friends since we were young teenagers.
This connection reminds me just how close the Holocaust still is. We may not personally know the victims or survivors, but we might know someone who shares the same name as one of them.
