The killing of innocent lives wasn’t enough for the Nazis. A big part of the Holocaust was theft and deception.

When the Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz, they came across haunting reminders of the 1.1 million people who’d been murdered at Auschwitz, including 44,000 pairs of shoes. Soviet soldiers also found 88 pounds of eyeglasses. The article types of items are a puzzle to me. Glasses are usually custom-made, The frames may be standard, but the lenses are specifically made as per the prescription or advice of an optician. Shoes, especially in the first few decades of the 20th century would also be tailor-made for the person who would wear them. They would basically be useless to anyone else, so why did the Nazis keep them.

When the European Jews were arrested during raids, they were told they would be resettled. A deception was created that things would not be as bad as they envisaged it would be. They were allowed to bring one suitcase, this was part of the deception.

The troops who liberated Auschwitz discovered almost eight tons of human hair. Prisoners at Auschwitz had their hair shaved when they first arrived at the camp. Not only did the Nazis steal their belongings, they also stole their dignity. They also found hundreds of thousands of men’s, women’s and undoubtedly children’s garments.

All these things now are a reminder of how evil mankind can be. The one thing the Nazis didn’t take into consideration, was that all these items also became evidence of their crimes.
