During the Covid pandemic, many countries advised individuals to self-isolate if they experienced—or even suspected—they might have Covid‑19 symptoms. The recommended isolation period generally ranged from 7 to 14 days.
Some say this situation is unprecedented. Yet for many, the idea of forced isolation is not new. During World War II, countless people were forced into hiding under the brutal regime of the Nazis—a regime fueled by hate and indifference. The systematic persecution led to the suffering and loss of millions, especially among Jews, Romani people, the disabled, and other groups whom the Nazis dehumanized.
To survive, many were compelled to hide, embracing an extreme form of self‑isolation. One of the most famous accounts of life in hiding is that of the Frank family. Of the Frank family, only Otto—Anne and Margot’s father—survived; he endured the loss of his wife and daughters to what can be seen as a metaphorical ‘virus’ of hate and indifference.

Below are some reflective diary entries that capture the spirit of Anne and Margot Frank:
Margot Frank
“Times change, people change, thoughts about good and evil change, about true and false. But what always remains constant is the affection that your friends feel for you—those who always have your best interests at heart.”

Anne Frank
“Last night, Margot and I were lying side by side in my bed. It was incredibly cramped, but that’s what made it fun. She asked if she could read my diary once in a while. ‘Parts of it,’ I said, and then I asked if I might read hers. She agreed.”
“Everyone has within them a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be—how much you can love, what you can accomplish, and what your potential is!”

While Covid‑19 has become less of an issue today with widely available vaccines, the persistent virus of hate and anti‑semitism remains a significant challenge.
