Graphic photos of the Holocaust often tell such harrowing stories, but sometimes it takes just an inventory list of everyday items that are more shocking because it tells the story of people like you and me. They ate the same food, wore the same clothes, and used identical cups and plates. It was only because of a group of men who determined they were somehow different—a lesser class of human being. However, it was those men who were really the unter mensch.
The van Cleef family consisted of
David Isaac van Cleef. Occupation: Diamond polisher. Age 37. Marianne van Cleef-Pinto. Occupation: Seamstress. Age 39.
Frederica van Cleef. Occupation: Student. Age 14.
They were all murdered on July 16, 1943 at Sobibor.
Below is the list of all their belongings, which undoubtedly would have been given to Nazi supporters or sold with the proceeds going to the Nazi regime.
