A marriage disrupted

Eighty-three years ago today, Edie (Elias) van Biene and Sara (Sonja) Rood were married in The Hague.

Just a few days ago, I celebrated my own 30th wedding anniversary. It was a hot day, and I still vividly remember our first dance, the kiss, and our first night of passionate love as a married couple—each moment draped in magic.

How different it must have been for Elias and Sonja. They married in a dark and uncertain chapter of history, not knowing how many anniversaries they might share. In the end, it was only a few.

The Jewish wedding on July 26, 1942, in The Hague of Edie (Elias) van Biene and Sara (Sonja) Rood. The groom picks up his bride from her parental home at Zuid Binnensingel (now Buitenom) 158 in The Hague.

Elias was murdered on January 20, 1945, at the Auschwitz subcamp known as Außernlager KZ Althammer in Poland—just one week before the liberation of Auschwitz. He was 26 years old.

Sonja initially managed to hide, but was eventually captured and deported to Auschwitz. She survived the Holocaust and later emigrated to Israel, where she remarried she passed away on April 25, 1971, at the age of 52.

I don’t know exactly when Elias was sent to Westerbork, but I do know that on September 3, 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz. He was on the same transport as Anne Frank and her family.

  1. Dirk, I cannot find Sonjya Rood bio anywhere. Did she have any children? Who did she marry? Did they do anything to teach the Holocaust?
