Flight Sergeant Nicholas Stephen Alkemade (1922–1987) was a rear gunner in Royal Air Force Avro Lancaster heavy bombers during World War II, who survived—without a parachute—a fall of 18,000 feet (5,500 m) when abandoning his out-of-control, burning aircraft over Germany.

On the night of 24 March 1944, 21-year-old Alkemade was one of seven crew members in Avro Lancaster B Mk. II, DS664,of No. 115 Squadron RAF. Returning from a 300 bomber raid on Berlin, east of Schmallenberg, DS664 was attacked by a German Ju 88 night-fighter, caught fire and began to spiral out of control. Because his parachute was un-serviceable, Alkemade jumped from the aircraft without one, preferring to die by impact rather than burn to death. He fell 18,000 feet (5,500 m) to the ground below.

His fall was broken by pine trees and a soft snow cover on the…

Cowra breakout

History of Sorts

The Cowra breakout occurred on 5 August 1944, when at least 1,104 Japanese prisoners of war attempted to escape from a prisoner of war camp near Cowra, in New South Wales, Australia. It was the largest prison escape of World War II, as well as one of the bloodiest. During the ensuing manhunt, 4 Australian soldiers and 231 Japanese soldiers were killed. The remaining escapees were captured and imprisoned.

Cowrapowcamp

By August 1944 there were 2,223 Japanese prisoners of war in Australia, including 544 merchant seamen. Of these 1,104 were housed in Camp B of No. 12 Prisoner of War Compound near Cowra, in the central west of New South Wales. They were guarded by the 22nd Garrison Battalion.

On Friday 4 August, in response to information that the Japanese were discussing a mass outbreak, notice was given that all Japanese prisoners below the rank of Lance Corporal would be…

Who actually are the Trump supporters?

Anyone who reads my blogs knows I try to stay away from current politics as much as possible. But sometimes I have to speak out.

I believe in everyone’s right in freedom of expression, but that will need to go hand in hand with an equal amount of responsibility.

When I saw the amount of Nazi and Third Reich symbolisms , I believe even one is too many, during yesterday’s storming of the Capitol in DC I was disturbed.

During one of the video footages I saw a few people walking around with so called KEK flags, lets just be clear about it and see, on what these flags are based on.

Even more disturbingly is the fact there were people doing the Nazi salute.

For all you you Trump supporters, you will have to ask yourself the question “Do I want to be associated with these Neo Nazis ?”

Only you can answer that.

Hongerwinter-Hunger winter.

History of Sorts

honger 1

In September 1944 most of the southern part of the Netherlands had been liberated, Unfortunately the rest of the country faced a very harsh  winter. Extreme cold combined with lack of food resulted in a famine, causing the death of about 20,000 citizens.

Dutch railway workers had gone on strike hoping to help the allied forces to advance. Alas the British led allied campaign called Operation Market Garden failed. The Nazis retaliated by blocking food supplies.

The effects of the famine is still felt more then 7 decades after it ended. One famous example of someone who suffered with the effects of the hunger winter for the rest of her life is Audrey Hepburn. She spent her childhood in the Netherlands during the hunger winter and although she would become a very successful actress who accumulated quite some wealth in her later years,  she had lifelong negative medical conditions as a result…

Taste of death-Margot Wölk ,Hitler’s food taster.

History of Sorts

hitler1v2.jpg

Every meal could have been her last. And when she had finished eating the bland vegetarian dishes put before her, 25-year-old Margot Wölk and her young female colleagues would burst into tears and “cry like dogs” because they were grateful still to be alive.

Hitler was a vegetarian, it is not precisely known when he became vegetarian but certainly throughout  WWII. Allegedly he once commented that he didn’t like to eat lobster because he thought it was cruel how lobsters were cooked alive.

the-lobster-pot

Yet he had no issues killing millions of men, women and children, nor did he have any problems forcing 15 young women to become his food tasters, to ensure he wouldn’t get poisoned.

Margot Wölk, (born 27 December 1917), is a German former secretary who was one of 15 young women who, in 1942, were selected to taste German leader Adolf Hitler’s food at the Wolf’s Lair in East Prussia for some two…

Enablers of Evil

History of Sorts

zyklon b

There are some facts that can be disputed in relation to the Holocaust, albeit very few. The one thing though that is indisputable is that Hitler and his henchmen were not able to cause so much death and destruction if it hadn’t been for the men and women who helped them.

It may be disputed that maybe some helped reluctantly for fear of their own lives or livelihoods, they did help nevertheless thus becoming enablers of the Nazi regime.

Following are some pictures of a few of these hundreds of thousands  renablers of evil.Mind you many of these enjoyed being evil themselves.

Max Schmeling-defying an evil regime

History of Sorts

mAX

Often the psyche of people is that they see what they want  to see. They see a headline or a picture and they will have made up their minds. There is no further need for more details on the background story, they have enough to work with and make up their own story.

For example people will see the picture of Max Schmeling above giving the Nazi salute and they will just assume that Max clearly was a Nazi sympathizer.

Or they see the picture below of Max Shchmeling being warmly received by   Adolf Hitler and immediately they will think that Max was one of Hitler’s best buddies and favourite sports man. But on both occasions they could not be much further from the truth.

Max and AH

Truth is that Max Schmeling also saw things but he did not like what he saw and refused to join the Nazi party, which would…
