The laughing Gnome-Happy Birthday David Bowie.

History of Sorts

January 8, 1947 probably has not much of a historical significance, however it is the day which saw the birth of a truly musical genius,David Robert Jones, aka David Bowie.

But in order to   become this musical icon he had to make a few odd detours. Before Space Oddity,Ziggy Strdust,Life on Mars, Let’s dance, etc, he had to learn his craft by performing as a 15 year old in a band with the name ” the Konrads”.

It was 2 years later though with another band named “the King Bees” David Bowie’s talents were first captured on a record with a song titled “Liza Jane”.

However this song did not become a hit, also the fact it was credited as  Davie Jones with the King-Bees didn’t help, because in 1964 another Davy Jones was already a well established name as the singer of the Monkees.

In order David Robert Jones changed his…

Karl Gebhardt torturing to prove a point.

History of Sorts

karl gebhardt

When Reinhard Heydrich was severely injured after the assassination attempt on him,Operation Anthropoid, Himmler ordered his personal physician,Karl Gebhardt, to attend to Heydrich’s injuries.

Initially the recovery appeared to go well. Theodor Morell, Hitler’s personal physician, suggested the use of sulfonamides ,which was a new antibacterial drug,, but Gebhardt, assuming that  Heydrich would recover, declined the suggestion.

But a few days later Heydrich died. Hitler blamed Gebhardt for Heydrich’s death, claiming he died of gangrene.

Gebhardt constructed  experiments in conjunction with  with Himmler to prove to Hitler that the decision not to use sulfonamides had been the  correct one.

In Ravensbrück concentration camp,Heydrich’s injuries were  re-created in detail on some female inmates of the camp. To find out  just what had gone wrong, camp  doctors would purposely maximize the potential for infections by inserting glass shards and by injecting various virulent bacteria, in the open wounds  before stitching them up.

Happy Birthday Jim Croce

Jim Croce is one of my all time musical heroes. He would have turned 77 today. Unfortunately he died aged 30 in a plane crash. On Thursday night, September 20, 1973, during Croce’s Life and Times tour and the day before his ABC single “I Got a Name” was released, Croce and all five others on board were killed when their chartered Beechcraft E18S crashed into a tree during takeoff from the Natchitoches Regional Airport in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Celebrating his birthday with my 3 favourire Jim Croce songs and one lesser known song.

This is taken from his very first album ‘Facets’ the song ”Hard Hearted Hannah, the Vamp of Savannah” was originally released in 1924 by by Ager, Yellen & Bornstein, Inc. The words are by Jack Yellen, Bob Bigelow, and Charles Bates, and music by Milton Ager.

Hoping against all Hope- The stare of desperation.

It is amazing and in a way disturbing but this girl was born literally minutes away from where I was born and yet I was not aware of her existence or had even heard of her until now.

1944

Just a few seconds… that’s how long this girl stared into the camera on 19 May 1944 in the doorway of this boxcar in Westerbork, unaware of her fate. The train was about to depart for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Extermination Camp in Poland. It is surmised that she was gassed there during the night of 2 August 1944. Her exact identity was unknown for decades, but as the ‘Girl with the Scarf’ she became a symbol of the persecution of the Jews.

Extensive research conducted by the Dutch journalist Aad Wagenaar revealed in 1995 that the girl was not Jewish but in fact Sinti. Her name was Anna Maria Steinbach. She…

Annelise Julie van Voolen—9 Month Old Enemy of the State

I need someone to explain to me the threat this nine-month-old child posed to the Nazi state?

Annelise Julie van Voolen was born on 17 September 1942 in Amsterdam and was murdered on 1 July 1943 in Westerbork. She was cremated the following day July 2nd.

I don’t know what caused her death but I will call it murder, nonetheless. I can only assume she died because of the appalling living circumstances in Westerbork.

In late May 1943, Annelise’s father, Maurits found out while he was in his office at the Jewish council, that his family was picked up during a raid in Amsterdam. He wrote a letter to some friends telling them about the fate of his family and that he would voluntarily join them in the Westerbork concentration camp. He also asked friends to send letters and parcels.

Maurits van Voolen was murdered in Extern kommando Kaufering, 9 January 1945.

His wife and one of the children survived the war.[1]

The sinking off the MV Wilhelm Gustloff

History of Sorts

The sinking of the Titanic may be the most infamous naval disaster in history, and the torpedoing of the Lusitania the most infamous in wartime. But with death counts of about 1,500 and 1,200 respectively, both are dwarfed by what befell the Wilhelm Gustloff, a German ocean liner that was taken down by a Soviet sub on Jan. 30, 1945, killing 9,343 people—most of them war refugees, about 5,000 of them children

wilhelmgustloff105_v-contentgrossMV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German military transport ship which was sunk on 30 January 1945 by Soviet submarine S-13 in the Baltic Sea while evacuating German civilians, Nazi officials and military personnel from Gdynia (Gotenhafen) as the Red Army advanced. By one estimate,9,400 people died, which makes it the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history.

Constructed as a cruise ship for the Nazi Kraft durch Freude (Strength Through Joy) organisation in 1937…

Michael Keogh-The man who saved Hitler.

History of Sorts

keogh1_indo

There is a saying ” Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.”

But what if in saving one life you inadvertently plunged the world into the most catastrophic horror of all time? What if you saved the life of Adolf Hitler just as he was taking his first baby steps to becoming the most evil monster in history?

Portrait of Corporal Adolf Hitler during his stay in a military hospital, 1918Michael Keogh was an Irish soldier who served on both sides of World War I, and has become known as “the man who saved Hitler.

Michael Patrick Keogh was born in 1891, the son of a local Royal Irish Constabulary policeman Laurence Keogh, in Tullow, County Carlow. Some of Keogh’s ancestors had been involved in the 1798 Rebellion in County Wexford, and his grandfather Mathew Keogh was the leader of the 1887 resistance against the Coolgreany Evictions also in County Wexford. His great uncle was Myles Keogh, the second in command to Colonel Custer, and who died at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

The Nine Sovereigns at Windsor for the funeral of King Edward VII.

History of Sorts

9

I have often wondered If World War I was nothing else then a family feud gone out of control.

If you look at all the royal families in Europe and even outside of Europe, they are mostly all related  in one way or another. There is nothing more clearer indicating this then a picture which was taken after the funeral of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Emperor of India occurred on Friday, 20 May 1910.(picture above)

Standing, from left to right: King Haakon VII of Norway-  the late King’s nephew by marriage/son-in-law and fourth cousin (once removed);Tsar Ferdinand of the Bulgarians-  the late King’s second cousin; King Manuel II of Portugal and the Algarve,-the late King’s fourth cousin;Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Prussia- the late King’s nephew;  King George I of the Hellenes(Greece) – the late King’s brother-in-law/fourth cousin and King Albert…
